Project Zomboid server guide

Make a Project Zomboid server private or whitelisted

Set Password in Server Settings so only friends who know it can join. For a whitelist, turn off Open; then only accounts that already exist on the server can join, and an admin creates new ones.

The settings

  • Password (Password): asked for when a player joins.
  • Open (Open): on, anyone can create an account; off, only existing accounts can join.
  • Public (Public): shows the server in the in-game list.
  • Max Accounts Per User (MaxAccountsPerUser): limits accounts per Steam user.
  • Drop Off White List After Death (DropOffWhiteListAfterDeath): removes an account when its character dies, on servers with Open off.

Add players to a whitelist

  1. Leave Open on while your friends join once, so their accounts are made.
  2. Turn Open off and restart the server.
  3. For a new player later, an admin adds them in game with /adduser "name" "password".

Remove someone

Ban them from the Players page or Discord.

Questions

What is the difference between a password and a whitelist?

A password keeps out people who don't know it. A whitelist keeps out anyone without an account on the server, even with the password.
