Valheim server guide

Back up and restore your Valheim server

HaruHost backs up the Valheim world on demand, on a schedule or before updates, keeps as many backups as you choose and restores one in a single step. Valheim also keeps its own backups; Number of Backups and the backup intervals on the Auto Config page set them.

HaruHost backups

  • Back up on demand, on a schedule, or before every update with an automation.
  • Choose how many backups to keep; older ones are removed.
  • Restore a backup in one step.

Valheim's own saves

  • Save Interval: how often the world saves, 30 minutes by default.
  • Number of Backups: how many of Valheim's automatic backups are kept, 4 by default.
  • Short Backup Interval and Long Backup Interval: 2 hours between the first backups, then 12 hours, by default.

Moving a world

To bring a world from another host, upload its files on the server's Files page and set World Name to its name.

Questions

Where is the Valheim world saved?

In the worlds_local folder of the server's save data. The Files page shows it, and you can download it there.

Should I back up before a Valheim update?

Yes. An automation can back up the server before every update, so a world is never updated without a copy.
