Don't Starve Together server guide

How to set up a Don't Starve Together dedicated server

Get a cluster token from your Klei account, then create a Don't Starve Together server in HaruHost and paste it in the Cluster Token step. HaruHost downloads the server, runs the overworld and the caves, gives them their ports, and opens cluster.ini and the world files in the browser.

What HaruHost does for you

  • SteamCMD: not needed. HaruHost downloads the dedicated server and updates it with one button.
  • The cluster token: a step in the create wizard, with help to get it from Klei; see cluster token.
  • Caves: the overworld and the caves run together, each with its own ports; turn the caves off in Config Variables.
  • The files: cluster.ini, server.ini, worldgenoverride.lua and modoverrides.lua, for the overworld and the caves, open in the browser.
  • Getting friends in: with the Tunnel, no port forwarding, even behind CGNAT.

On Windows

  1. Download HaruHost for Windows and sign in.
  2. Choose Add → New game server, pick this PC, then Don't Starve Together.
  3. On the Connection step, choose Tunnel to skip router setup, or Ports to use your own address.
  4. Paste your Klei cluster token in the Cluster Token step.
  5. Create the server and start it. If HaruHost lists missing prerequisites, press Install selected.
  6. Send friends the Server Address from the server's Details tab.

Install HaruHost on Linux

On Ubuntu (x86-64), run:

curl -fsSL https://haruhost.com/install.sh | sudo bash

HaruHost installs as a service. Sign in with the QR code it shows in your SSH session, then open the web panel from any browser. On Ubuntu it installs Docker with one click when you create your first server.

On Linux

  1. In the web panel, choose Add → New game server, pick your Linux server, then Don't Starve Together.
  2. On the Connection step, choose Tunnel, or Ports to use the server's own address. The Tunnel needs HaruHost running as a service, as the install command sets it up.
  3. Create the server. If Docker isn't installed yet, HaruHost asks first; press Install, then Create Server.
  4. Paste your Klei cluster token in the Cluster Token step.
  5. Start the server and send friends the Server Address from the Details tab.

Questions

Does the server keep running when I stop playing?

Yes. It runs on its own, so friends can play while you are offline. On Linux and with the Windows background service it also runs without anyone signed in.
